Scientific Diplomacy

Scientific cooperation with Mozambique takes the form of numerous inter-university research and training activities in fields such as biology, medicine, geology, agronomy, chemical and environmental engineering, territorial planning, education, gender policies, anthropology and economics.

The Cultural, Scientific and Technological Cooperation Agreement between Italy and Mozambique, signed in 2007 and already ratified by Mozambique, is also being ratified by the Italian side. In general, cultural cooperation between the two countries is experiencing a revival, also thanks to the ‘Italy, Culture, Africa’ programme promoted by MAECI for 2019.

Scientific and technological cooperation activities are mostly carried out at the country’s main public university, the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), in the fields of public health, environment, agropecuarian production, territorial planning and local development. Italy’s financial commitment to support UEM has resulted in the allocation of more than EUR 25 million over the years. With the UEM, 25 research projects are underway in the fields of biomedical sciences and applied sciences for spatial development. A number of centres of excellence have also been established: of particular importance is the ‘Biotechnology Centre’ co-financed by the Italian Cooperation as well as the Universities of Sassari and Roma La Sapienza.

The UEM also regularly organises, with the support of our Cooperation, postgraduate Masters courses on biotechnology, management and planning of informal urban settlements, agricultural education, international cooperation, inclusive education, distance education, oil and gas geology, and pathological anatomy.
