Italy and Mozambique

Relations between Italy and Mozambique are based on a solid and deep friendship, which began even before independence in the 1970s. Then, they were significantly strengthened by the role of mediator played by Italy during the negotiations that culminated in the signing of the Rome Peace Agreement on October 4, 1992, which ended 16 years of civil war that devastated the country. Also to be mentioned are the numerous interventions of Development Cooperation in the last 30 years, in relation to which the authorities Mozambicans are sincerely grateful and have contributed to making Italy one of Mozambique’s main partners. Intense are also the relations existing at the level of local governments and civil society organizations.

At this stage, despite the known budgetary constraints, Italy remains an important partner, both in terms of development cooperation and in other important sectors of bilateral relations such as economic, commercial and cultural. In recent years, thanks to the support policy adopted by the Embassy with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, economic and commercial relations have also improved significantly, amplified by the recent discovery of large deposits of natural gas made by ENI in the Rovuma River basin, in the north of the country.

At the multilateral level, Italy and Mozambique maintain a constructive dialogue in all major international forums.

ITALOMOZ HISTORY

The historic bilateral relationship between Italy and Mozambique is the subject of a specific project conceived by the Embassy to create an online archive that illustrates the history of cooperation between the two countries from 1964 to 1994, with information and documents showing the path of relations during the War of Independence and the first crucial years after decolonization. The project (in Portuguese) was created by the Italian Embassy in Mozambique, produced by the PROMARTE company and can be found at the following address: https://italomozhistoria.com/
