Maputo, 8 July 2026 — The closing ceremony of the COREBIOM project was held today in the “Cavaliere d’Italia” Hall of the city’s Natural History Museum. COREBIOM is part of the broader cooperation programme RINO, funded by Italy and aimed at developing and improving the conservation of environmental areas and biodiversity in Mozambique.
The project concludes with significant results: the complete renovation of the Maputo Natural History Museum, inaugurated in 2025, the restoration and upgrading of the facilities of the Inhaca Marine Biology Station, and the creation of the Biodiversity Conservation Centre.
These results were achieved through the joint work of Sapienza University of Rome, Eduardo Mondlane University of Maputo, the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station of Naples, and WeWorld, under the direction of the local office of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and the Italian Embassy.
In addition to the results achieved, during the institutional remarks Ambassador of Italy Gabriele Annis underlined the importance of the approach and objectives adopted by Italian cooperation: “a cooperation that does not create dependency, but capacity; that does not merely provide tools, but builds opportunities; a cooperation that invests in people so that they themselves become protagonists of their own future and that of their country.”
The ceremony took place just days after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Italian and Mozambican Ministries of the Environment, which will provide a new instrument of cooperation between the two countries to better address some of today’s key challenges: the conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity, adaptation to climate change, and the sustainable management of natural resources.
