From 23 to 24 March, the Italian Ambassador Gabriele Annis carried out an institutional visit to Sofala Province to strengthen Italy–Mozambique cooperation in the health sector, with a focus on training, innovation and prevention.
During the mission, in the presence of the Secretary of State of Sofala Province, Manuel Rodrigues, a neonatal simulation laboratory was inaugurated at the Beira Institute of Health Sciences, implemented by CUAMM, AISPO, ACAP Sant’Egidio and the University of Sassari. Equipped with advanced technology and telemedicine, the laboratory contributes to improving the quality of neonatal care and is part of a broader effort that has already led to a significant reduction in infant mortality.
In his remarks, Ambassador Annis stated: “May these spaces inspire excellence and help train reliable professionals capable of making a difference in the life of every patient, promoting scientific rigor and dedication to the service of health.”
The visit also included a meeting with radiology students. Together with them, the campaign “Capulana é Vida” was launched, promoted by the Italian Cooperation and the Sofala Provincial Directorate of Health, aimed at preventing cervical cancer. The initiative, organized on the occasion of Women’s Month, includes a competition for young people (aged 18–35) to design a capulana (the traditional Mozambican fabric) promoting prevention. The winning design will be produced and awarded with a training experience in Maputo with designer Amirah Adam. Applications are open until 10 April.
During the visit, the Ambassador also toured the DREAM Multifunctional Centre of the Sant’Egidio Community, dedicated to the prevention and treatment of HIV and other infectious diseases. “It is always a pleasure to visit DREAM Centres, where solidarity and professionalism serve the community and testify to the historic bond between Mozambique and Italy,” the Ambassador said.
On the morning of 24 March, the Ambassador also visited the rural hospital of Nhamatanda to review the project on the prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), launched in January 2024. The visit opened with a welcome session and a presentation of activities supported over the years by the Italian Cooperation. The delegation then toured the facility’s outpatient clinics and met directly with service beneficiaries.
