On 3 October 2026, the Cine-Teatro Scala in Maputo, with every seat taken, hosted the Second Concert for Peace, promoted by the Embassy of Italy in Maputo as part of the MOZITA 2026 cultural programme, an initiative for integrated promotion and the launch of collaborations between Italy and Mozambique in the field of the cultural economy.<\/p>\n
Thirty-four years after the conclusion of the General Peace Agreement, signed in Rome in 1992, the country’s path to peace was celebrated in music. That peace was achieved also thanks to the contribution of the Italian Government and the Community of Sant’Egidio. Under the artistic direction of Maestro Girolamo Deraco and Maestra Eldevina “Kika” Materula, soloists from the Luigi Boccherini Conservatory in Lucca performed alongside the Xiqitsi orchestra, conducted by Maestra Kika Materula. The highlight of the evening was the four world premieres written for the occasion, including “United We Sing”, composed especially by Maestro Deraco to celebrate this bond.<\/p>\n
In his opening remarks, the Ambassador of Italy to Maputo, Gabriele Annis, recalled the role of dialogue in building peace and the process which, through the mediation of the Italian Government and the Community of Sant’Egidio, led to the end of the Mozambican civil war. “People who had fought one another for years chose to sit at the same table and to recognise one another as part of the same humanity and the same nation,” he said.<\/p>\n
The Ambassador gave music a special role, calling it “one of the oldest and most universal languages”, capable of building bridges even in times of division, and one that did not fall silent during the years of conflict. “It is important to remember: to keep in mind what was achieved and everything that was learned in order to achieve it. So that we do not have to start from scratch every time,” he stressed.<\/p>\n
