The Law of 23 August 2004, n. 226 (Official Gazette No. 204 of 31.8.2004), provides - starting from 1 January 2005 - the early suspension of compulsory military service and the establishment of professional military service.
Italian citizens who intend to repatriate to perform voluntary military service cannot take advantage of the benefits provided for by law 433/66, which provides for repatriation at the expense of the State exclusively for military service obligations.
