Repatriation for health reasons

The Consular Office of the Embassy provides assistance, in collaboration with the Italian territorially competent institutions (Prefectures, Police Commissaries, Municipalities, Local Health Departments, Social Services), to the repatriation of Italian citizens living in Eswatini and Mozambique who are in a state of poverty, in serious health conditions and in need of hospitalization in Italy, and of Italian minors in a state of abandonment.

Permanent return to Italy

Italian citizens who have been resident abroad for at least 12 months and who transfer their residence to Italy have the right to customs facilitations and - depending on regional, provincial or municipal regulations - to potential financial contributions. Customs exemptions apply to goods owned and used by the applicant and intended for personal use as well as to the car owned for at least 6 months. The return of the goods must take place within 6 months from the date declared as the last day of residence abroad. For details, please refer to the website of the Customs Agency.

Repatriation of corpses

The Consular Office provides assistance in the case of repatriation of corpses of Italian citizens who have died in the consular district, requesting authorisation from the Italian municipality for the burial of the corpse or ashes and issuing the mortuary passport.

The following documentation is required to carry out the procedures:

  • death certificate;
  • certificate from the competent local health authority showing that specific hygiene and safety regulations have been observed;
  • certificate of death in an area free of infectious and endemic diseases.
