Research of compatriots abroad

Information concerning Italian citizens abroad may be provided in compliance with current legislation on the protection of personal data (Legislative Decree 196 of 2003), which in most cases requires the consent of the person sought. The Consular Section of the Embassy, within the limits of the instruments allowed by local legislation and the above mentioned, may carry out searches for which the applicant has shown a legitimate interest. Requests should be sent directly by e-mail to the Consular Office (consolare.maputo@esteri.it ) by means of a signed and reasoned request (on plain paper), enclosing a copy of an identity document.

As regards requests to know the address of residence abroad of compatriots (also for notification purposes), please note that they should be addressed to the relevant Italian municipalities of AIRE registration (municipality of last residence in Italy or municipality of origin). The registries of Italian citizens residing abroad (AIRE) are, in fact, kept at the Municipalities and at the Ministry of the Interior (art. 1, paragraph 1, Law 470/1988).

Assistance to prisoners

In case of arrest in Botswana, Eswatini or Mozambique, the Italian citizen has the right to request consular protection. The Consular Section of the Embassy will provide all possible assistance, including: visits to prisons, providing names of lawyers on site and maintaining contact with family members.
The consular office, on the other hand, cannot intervene in legal proceedings on behalf of the compatriot and/or bear the legal costs.
