Italy's position in Mozambique is traditionally significant, especially in the energy sector and its related industries. In the last eight years (2012-2019) Italy is the first European investor in Mozambique, with 3.5 billion dollars of investments, and the third globally. In 2019 alone, Italy invested 288 million dollars in Mozambique, confirming itself as the third largest investor.
In the country there are about 50 Italian companies. In addition to ENI and SAIPEM, CMC (civil construction), Bonatti (engineering and Oil & Gas), Nuovo Pignone (gas turbines) and RENCO (construction and hotel facilities) are present.
ENI plays a leading role with regard to major projects in the energy sector, the future driver of growth. In the north of the country (Cabo Delgado province). In 2017 it launched an offshore gas extraction and liquefaction project worth 7 billion dollars (the so-called "Coral South") as part of an international consortium led on par with ExxonMobil (which also includes the Chinese CNPC, the Kogas, the Portuguese Galp and the Mozambican ENH). The same Consortium announced a further onshore investment project of approximately 25 billion dollars (so-called Mamba):
Saipem has been awarded a 6 billion dollar contract for the construction of a liquefied natural gas plant in Cabo Delgado, in a joint venture with the American McDermott and the Japanese Chiyoda. Saipem's works for the construction of the gas liquefaction trains continue in line with the forecast for the start of extraction and transformation activities in 2024.
BHGE Nuovo Pignone has a plant on the north coast of the country and operates in the two major natural gas sites (area 1 and area 4). The company has recently been awarded a contract for the supply of turbomachinery for the extraction of LNG (at the site in area 1, managed by Total).
CMC is carrying out two infrastructure projects (resettlement village and camp expansion) for Total, for a value of approximately 268 million dollars. The company also completed the rehabilitation of the Massingir Dam (worth approximately $ 50 million).
Bonatti is also active in the country, through a partnership agreement with the Mozambican ENH Logistics, which has created a mixed company under local law, "Enhl-Bonatti Lda" (Today EB) for the supply of services in the sector of oil & gas.
RENCO is present with some multifunctional buildings, workshops and a 5-star resort.
