Scientific Cooperation

Scientific cooperation with Mozambique is embodied in numerous inter-university research and training activities in sectors such as biology, medicine, geology, agronomy, chemical and environmental engineering, territorial planning, education, gender policies, anthropology, economics.

The Cultural, Scientific and Technological Cooperation Agreement between Italy and Mozambique, signed in 2007 and already ratified by Mozambique, is also being ratified by the Italian side. In general, the cultural cooperation between the two countries is experiencing a phase of relaunch, also thanks to the "Italy, Culture, Africa" program promoted by MAECI for 2019.

Scientific and technological cooperation activities take place for the most part at the main public university in the country, the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), in the sectors of public health, environment, agricultural production, territorial planning and local development. The Italian financial commitment in support of the EMU has resulted in the allocation of over 25 million euros over the years. With EMU, 25 research projects are underway in the fields of biomedical sciences and applied sciences for territorial development. Some centers of excellence have also been set up: of particular importance is the “Biotechnology Center” co-financed by the Italian Cooperation as well as by the Universities of Sassari and Rome La Sapienza.

The UEM also regularly organizes, with the support of our Cooperation, postgraduate Masters in biotechnology, management and planning of informal urban settlements, agricultural training, international cooperation, inclusive education, distance education, oil and gas geology, pathological anatomy.
